Potteric Carr Wins 'Sustainable Wetland of the Year'

Yorkshire Wildlife Trust’s Potteric Carr Nature Reserve (a Site of Special Scientific Interest) recently received the accolade of 2014 ‘Sustainable Wetland of the Year’ from the Chartered Institute of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM). The Institute commented that of particular interest was the reedbed filtration system which takes urban runoff from Doncaster and reduces the nutrient and metal loadings in the water before being used to support wildlife habitats within the nature reserve.

PAA designed this reedbed system in 1997 with the aspiration of creating a wetland that would not only act as an environmental buffer but also provide a viable habitat for wildlife, as well as a landscape and amenity resource for the Trust. Monitoring of the wetland in subsequent years has shown that such Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) can successfully provide multiple benefits but that appropriate maintenance is critical for the long-term sustainability of this type of wetland system.
